It is divided into chapters of about 10-15 pages each and the prose is readable and crisp. The book covers in a candid but judicious way a number of hot-button topics, ranging from debates that have swirled around co-education, the pressure of exams, relationships between the state and private sector, the charitable status of schools, and their religious character. It regularly references the thoughts and documents of leading educators in the sector and of the government. The overall result is that the quirks and jargon that have become the norm in the education of British teenagers - not just in the private sector - is clearly expounded. But, do not take me wrong, it is purely historical. There is no serious statistics or analysis, or discussions of how changes in British society and economics affected public schools and its compositions, or how public schools contributed to class devide and preservation of upper-middle and elite class values.
